Completion Tasks and the Problem of Balance

Because thematic demands play such an important role in the manner in which a picture is composed, and our results indicate how easily a child’s competence can be masked (witness the Family theme, which usually elicits a simple alignment strategy), a set of completion tasks was designed. I wished to explore the child’s sensitivity to six pictorial designs that are deliberately left incomplete and exhibit varying degrees of imbalance. The six outline drawings vary in terms of the number and type of items and their distribution across the page (see ills. 156 a–f). From a compositional point of view, the drawings are unfinished. They differ in the manner in which forms are distributed, for example, the extent to which they are restricted to a sector of the paper, which creates the impression of an unfinished composition that invites completion. Design a displays its forms in, approximately, one third of the right side of the paper; design b limits its forms to the upper left quarter of the page; design c uses only the left half of the page; design d depicts two relatively small figures in the center of the page; design e consists of two items, one on the left side and one on the right side of the page; and design f depicts three items on a diagonal axis from the upper left to lower right side of the page. With the exception of design c, all the figures are clearly representational and refer to suns, clouds, flowers, a tree, a human, a boat, and a fish.
